All Year Crit Show

After all my failed attempts from the other day I decided to try acetate and to my surprise this actually worked. From here I have resized it to be A1 in size. The other element to this that I like is that it can be scanned and work from both sides.

The first set of feedback is from the 6 hat crit;

Red hat (emotional response) – this person didn’t care that bacteria are everywhere and all around. It’s been around before us so it’s not disgusting, he felt I was examining something that’s already out there but does like the idea in how I’m examining it.

Green hat (improvements) – this person liked that it was emotionally funny with how clinical it’s presented. That to add to this I could print it on hospital sheets or place QR stickers on actual objects. The digital representation of the physical was liked because both are technically invisible.

Yellow hat (positives) – this person liked the colour of the acetate as it looks like the agar in a petri dish. They liked how it was hanging, seemed very scientific because of the transparencies. They said it reminded them of the White Cube hanging windshields. They also liked that it was not immediately recognisable.

White hat (factual) – this person thought it was an intellectual piece, liked that I used actual bacteria and that I took it a step further with the digital aspect. They thought this would get viewers to respond more.

Black hat (devil’s advocate) – this person thought that some people might not read the QR code as an interactive element but rather a comment on something digital and that I should add a sign so that people will know that they can scan it. Also just to make it bigger.

Spin the bottle crit was next;

Favourite parts of the work – this person said they liked that the code takes them to Instagram and it makes you think more about it by displaying it through a QR code. It also made them want to wash their hands cause you can see the actual growth.

Is the work Intellectual – this person said yes, because of the Petri dish and the QR code. Liked that I’m taking something aesthetic and revealing the gross truth about it. Also liked the interaction because it makes people pay attention.

Would it survive in an argument – this person just thought that the work was trying to help us to survive. But the bacteria could harm us. On a literal level, the plastic would survive as it’s not biodegradable but thought this could relate to the antibacterial spray only being able to kill 98% of bacteria.

The scale of the work – they liked the size of the print thought it was a small thing covering big problems

Most irritating aspect – for this person what was irritating that after seeing the effect it made her want to “itch” and shower, the filter made her feel gross.

In light of the group feedback, I'm feeling quite positive about the work. I feel like I’m already working towards what the feedback suggested I try and do. I think that they generally got what the work was about, especially the person who wanted to take a shower as a result of my work.

The comment of the red hat in that they don’t care about bacteria being around them surprised me given the current coronavirus pandemic. Also that the colour of the acetate made them think of Petri dishes, I hadn’t even considered this but was rather using it as a purely functional aspect.

There is nothing I particularly disagree with because I feel people could understand my work. If I had to choose one thing it would be about printing on acetate which is not biodegradable. I don’t feel like my work is a comment on the environment or that it relates to what my work is actually about.

If I had more time and money I would definitely have made it larger and multiples of them

The research that was most useful to the making of the piece was actually Ellie Antoniou’s tutorial, her suggestion of treating the QR code as the actual object and also having looked at her work and how she also uses plastic to display her work really helped me think about how I could improve displaying mine.
