Better Than Tomorrow

For the Better Than Tomorrow crit show we were asked to prepare 10 critical questions.

1. Do I need a Qr code to prompt the viewer or will the image and a note be sufficient?

2. Should the image itself be framed or perhaps displayed in a petri dish?

3. How did you like the effect? Could it be more interactive

?

4. Did you lose interest quickly?

5. Does the name of the effect interest/ confuse you?

6. Do you know what the work is? Is it the image/ effect/ both?

7. Do you think the interaction of the viewer to the image is important? Why?

8. Does it count as art?

9. What is the most memorable part of the work?

10. How do you feel about using the vending machine now? Does it make you want to wash your hands?

My answers to these questions before putting them out to the group were;

1. QR code otherwise viewer might not know it’s interactive – could be lazy to read.

2. Petri dish would help give clues to what the work is about.

3. For a first attempt, I’m happy but it could be more interactive/ personal.

4. Not immediately but by making it personal I think it will be more interesting for longer.

5. I think it will confuse some and interest others. I do think people will click on it out of interest.

6. I feel it is both. It’s the interaction of the viewer and the image that gives the work power.

7. Yes. The meaning of the work is to bring awareness to people of these microorganisms. By having them literally interact with them I feel achieves this.

8. Yes, in a contemporary world where we are exposed to life via our phones.

9. For me, it’s the moment the actual bacteria appears on the screen making itself visible.

10. A bit grossed out. Washing hands, yes

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to ask all my questions during the crit but the feedback I received was that they liked the use of the phone as it is something familiar. To look at the effect of technology has on humans, one person commented that they liked the excitement from the effect reveal. Another comment was to integrate the QR code better and also the scale of the image to be made bigger.

However, the overall feedback was generally positive and they were impressed that I had managed to make the effect work and so my work was chosen to be displayed in the Linear Gallery.
