As part of my third year, I am working on a dissertation that relates to my practical work. For my research, I went to the Wellcome Collection and spent a day in their incredible open library where I found a lot of material I can use. I will be looking at the relationship between art and health and looking at why these two fields have been so closely related and also what keeps them coming back to the other, also the benefits that art can bring to a clinical environment. As well as the research I collected from the library I will also be reading Illness as Metaphor by Susan Sontag and The Art of Living. Illness by Havi Carel which I feel will be useful for my dissertation.
While
at the Wellcome Collection, I was lucky enough to see the exhibition Misbehaving Bodies featuring work of Jo Spence and Oreet Ashery, which was a really fantastic exhibition to see focussing on how illness shapes identity and how Jo Spence developed her own style of phototherapy to cope with her diagnosis of breast cancer, this is something I feel I can incorporate into my dissertation as well, so I’m really happy I got to see it.
