London Trip

For the London trip, we started with Nevin Aladag’s Fanfare at the Haywood Gallery. For me, it was my favourite exhibition of the day. I loved how playful it was and these urban symphonies that these unassuming objects created. I also really enjoyed the removal of a human presence when it came to the actual playing of the instruments.

Next was a trip to the Science Gallery. 2 pieces from this exhibition really stood out to me, these being Mary Maggic’s Milik Bersama Rekombinan (Recombinant Commons) and Cibelle Cavalli Bastos INBODY:EXO/REAL(I)T.Y #aevtardeprogram.

Maggic’s piece appealed to me as it was also using Petri dishes to grow bacteria from self-collected samples. I like how Maggic incorporates the Petri dishes into her work as I have been wondering whether or not to do this with mine.

For Bastos’s work, I like how they have integrated the QR codes into the space, also the use of QR codes and Instagram to create an interactive environment for the viewer. These are all things I am currently considering within my own work and so to see another artist using it in their own way really helps for me to envision how I could do it for my own work.

Another stop was the White Cube to see Cerith Wyn Evans works. In the selected works pictured what I enjoyed about them was their scale. I enjoyed the light projections on to the wall and the ambiguity of their shapes. The hanging windshields are also appealing to me as it forces the viewer to move around them and to be conscious of their presence, the same goes for the concertina-style glass doors and lastly the hanging light sculptures which the sheer scale of the pieces were incredibly impressive. I definitely think that the way Evans displays the work so that the viewer has to be conscious of them is something I need to take into consideration for my work in the future.
