Third Year Begins

For the first week back in the studios we were tasked to create a piece or series of work with whatever we have on our person or that is in our immediate vicinity. From this and taking my current theme of work into consideration, I made a series of “self-made” viruses, I tried to keep the structural appearance consistent and I enjoyed the spontaneity of the brief.

Carrying on from the initial brief, we then had to make another more developed piece of work, still from what we could find around us. From this I made a clear glass virus from scrap pieces of glass I found in the skip and hot glue gunned them together. As dirty as the process sounds, the result was actually quite visually appealing and the response to it was generally well-received. The theme of materiality seems to be an important factor in my work, especially if the viewer can touch the object considering that viruses and bacteria are commonly spread through touch.

The final, resolved, piece for this brief was a larger, sharper, glass virus. I wanted it to look enticing but dangerous. The struggle I had with this was in the construction of the piece, I don’t like that the joints are so visible but in this case that couldn’t be avoided because of the shards of glass. Also, I would like to create something on a larger scale and this sentiment was shared in the feedback I received.
