Third Year Foyer Show

For the foyer show, I wanted to make a large-scale sculpture of a bacterial cell invading the space. For this piece, I made a Bacteriophage cell of about 2,5m tall. The bacteriophage is one of the most common bacterial cells, only normally it is unseen to the human eye, so by making it this big it feels vaguely ominous. The name was derived from the term “to devour” which I found appropriate for the purpose of the work. I wanted the work to seem intimidating but to spark interest.

The feedback I received was to make the structure more solid or to look at modernist sculptures of the 1950s, to possibly go even larger or to make more of them. I’m not sure if I will continue with this approach to my work although I did enjoy the scale. Another potential thing to look into is to make the sculpture move. I’m not sure how I would do this but I think this could bring a playful, fun element to my work.
